JUNIOR RUGBY

Harbour Junior Rugby Club

Pre-season training is underway for the Harbour Junior Rugby Club players. Sessions are being held each Sunday at Watson Park, Port Chalmers, 3:30pm - 4:30pm. All existing and new players are welcome along.

Registration days are on Wednesday 10th March between 4:00pm and 6:00pm and Saturday between 3:00pm and 5:00pm at Watson Park. Keen young rugby players from the age of five to thirteen years are invited to come along and register.

Club membership is $35 per individual, with families of two or more children $60. Again this year, there will be a free rugby ball for every child registered. Each child is given a playing jersey and jacket for the season with shorts. socks and beanies available for sale.

The club has around 70 boys and girls playing for it each season with the aim to field a team in each grade. The club draws its players from a large area, predominately from Aramoana to Ravensbourne, over the hill in Purakanui and even Pine Hill - North East Valley.

An open day is planned on the 13th March (3:00pm - 5:00pm) to coincide with registration. There will be fun rippa games to participate in as well as a sausage sizzle.

The first competition game of the season will be on the 24th April.

Training sessions for the different teams are held once a week at Watson Park, Port Chalmers. These are usually an hour long. Home games played on a Saturday morning can be played there or at Moller Park, Ravensbourne.

The club continues to be lucky that parents of the players also step into the coaches role, some even taking teams through from the U7 grade to U13 grade. Without these people it is possible the club wouldn't be able to field teams in so many grades.

With the emphasis on fun as well as developing skills and fitness, players and their families enjoy their time at the club. Parent's, grandparents and friends can be found on the sidelines every Saturday at both home and away games to support players. At the end of each game, a player-of-the-day is chosen, with this person taking home a trophy, certificate and small prize pack for their efforts.

All players receive a medal at prize giving at the end of the season to recognise and acknowledge their participation during the season. It is also a way for them to remember their year at the club.
